Modern courtyard, London

This 1960s apartment block was getting a facelift, so it was only fair that the communal courtyard got a sophisticated new look too.

The courtyard is built over an underground car park, so this is in essence a roof/podium garden with no facility to plant into the ground.

The design uses raised planters to create secluded pockets of space for residents to enjoy private moments in a busy city. The linear design is enhanced by bands of slate grey tiles, and the planters are made of powder-coated steel to match the architecture of the new top floor. Bespoke timber benches are angled to prevent litter ingress.

A reduced planting palette of grasses and perennials promotes a restful atmosphere.
